Machine risk assessment: risk in the human–machine interface

Risk assessment in accordance with ISO 12100 is very often reduced to a description of the hazards present on the machine. This approach is intuitive, but it leads to simplifications that have limited value from a design perspective. The standard does not treat risk as an inherent property of the machine. Risk does not exist in isolation from use. It only arises when a person interacts with the machine, performing specific tasks under specific conditions.
